Orono High School – a 9-12 school that serves approximately 340 students in the university town of Orono, Maine – is seeking a dynamic and student-centered English teacher committed to supporting the growth of lifelong learners prepared to thrive in a rapidly changing world. English programming at OHS is built around a range of faculty-developed electives, and we are looking for an educator with a passion for language and communication who will help us continue to grow the scope of opportunities available to our students.
The ideal candidate will:
- Implement innovative teaching strategies–focused on skill development– that increase student engagement and critical thinking in both literature-focused and writing-intensive classes
- Foster a growth mindset that frames failure and feedback as learning opportunities
- Help students appreciate and know how to effectively use each stage of a multi-stage writing process
- Support the well-being of students by cultivating a lively, connected, and collaborative classroom communityContribute to a positive school culture where all feel a sense of belonging and safety
We're looking for an educator who can inspire curiosity, empower students, and cultivate globally-aware, courageous learners. The successful candidate will be skilled in using inquiry to drive learning, adept at providing constructive feedback and committed to ongoing professional growth.
Qualifications:
- B.S. or B.A. required
- Extensive coursework in English, composition, and communication preferred
- Eligibility for English/language arts teacher (7 – 12) certification from the Maine Department of Education preferred, but a pathway to certification will be supported for the right candidate
