High School Principal

RSU 26, in the university town of Orono, is seeking a full-time principal for Orono High School – a school that serves approximately 350 students with 70 staff members – to begin on August 1, 2025, or as soon as available. The success of Orono schools is due in large part to the work of our exceptional faculty and the wide support consistently offered by our community. The next principal of Orono High School will have the opportunity to build upon the school’s successes by working collaboratively with a cohesive leadership team across the district. 

The successful candidate will demonstrate deep knowledge and expertise in leading and supporting teachers and understand how to design programming & operate a school to meet the needs of today’s high school students.  The successful candidate must:

  • Effectively communicate; 

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with all stakeholders;

  • Develop ties with the community, the university, and other stakeholders; 

  • Promote the school with prospective students and families; 

  • Work to support & implement the district’s strategic plan and goals in OHS and RSU 26; 

  • Develop and oversee budgets;

  • Manage supervision and evaluation systems. 

Maine School Building Administrator certification (040) and CHRC required.

Band Teacher – One Year Position

RSU 26 Orono Schools is searching for an individual to serve in a full-time position teaching classes in Band to students in grades 4-12 for the 2025-2026 school year.  Specifically, the course load for this teaching assignment involves high school Band, middle school Band, 4th grade Band, 5th grade Band, and a Modern Band class. Candidates who feel confident with some elements of this load but who would need support in others are encouraged to apply. 

The candidate should be able to perform the following:

  • Support a collaborative classroom community
  • Effectively communicate with students, build their trust, motivate them, and understand their needs
  • Work cooperatively with staff, students, parent/guardians and community members

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or B.A. required
  • Eligibility for teacher (7 – 12) certification from the Maine Department of Education preferred but not required. The District will support pursuit of certification for the right candidate.

Permanent Substitutes

RSU 26 in Orono is seeking to hire 2 permanent substitutes for the 2025-2026 school year.  One permanent substitute will be working at Asa Adams Elementary, and one will be working at Orono Middle and High Schools.  


These permanent substitutes will be used in either a classroom-based substitute role or a support role and will be shifted as needed. The daily assignment will vary each day and will be organized and communicated through the substitute coordinator within each building.


Candidates should have completed at least 2 years of college and enjoy working with children and teens.  Successful applicants must have an up to date CHRC approval.

Early Childhood Special Education Teacher/Coordinator

RSU 26 is seeking a full-time Early Childhood Special Education Teacher/Coordinator with Maine State Certification as a Teacher of Exceptional Students (282B) to help launch our early childhood (3 & 4 Year Old) special education program. This position will be responsible for the evaluation, as well as coordination and delivery of services for identified students. Experience working with children who have emotional, learning, developmental, and behavioral challenges is desired.  Some summer work time is required for this position.

Candidates will be responsible for  ensuring compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regulations in our commitment to Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to students ages 3 to 4 years old with disabilities in being educated within their Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).

Essential Requirements: 

     *     Special Education Certification (282)  (282B preferred; willingness to obtain 282B will be considered) 
     *     Knowledge and understanding of Maine Unified Special Education Regulations (MUSER)
     *     Experience in consulting regarding special education with teachers, providers, and families of young children

Essential Responsibilities: 

     *     Coordinate screenings and evaluation throughout the school year to determine eligibility through Child Find                and observe students in the referral process. 
     *     Assist IEP teams in developing instructional techniques, including appropriate strategies, interventions,                        collaboration, accommodations, and modifications to support instruction within the student's least restrictive              environment (LRE).
     *     Complete Written Notices for IEP meetings. Review IEPs to ensure compliance with state regulations.                          Oversee tracking systems and timelines for special education paperwork to ensure compliance with state.                  regulations.
     *     Support the Part C to Part B transition process to public schools for incoming 3-year-olds—complete case.                    management responsibilities as necessary for students outside the public school setting to meet state                        regulations.
     *     Support the coordination and scheduling of service providers in the community settings and the schools to                  ensure the delivery of services. 
     *     Implement specially designed instruction in collaboration with the other members of the student’s team.
     *     Act as a liaison between parents, teachers, service providers, and other stakeholders to foster communication.
